Why 2026 Is a Great Year to Start Your Instructor Journey
Anyone considering the instructor pathway can usually find a reason to wait another year, and there will never be a version of "the perfect moment" that removes every doubt. Even so, a few genuine, practical reasons make now a strong time to actually commit rather than keep postponing. Diving as an industry continues to grow steadily, and demand for well-trained, genuinely capable instructors has stayed consistent even as travel patterns shift year to year - centres are looking for good people, not just filling seasonal gaps. Course formats have also become more flexible than they once were, with blended learning reducing the classroom time an IDC actually requires and making the pathway more accessible around existing work or travel commitments. And simply put, every year spent waiting is a year of teaching experience, student relationships, and professional development not being built - the pathway only gets longer the later it starts, never shorter. None of that means rushing into an IDC without proper preparation. It means recognising that "someday" rarely arrives on its own, and that starting the groundwork now - dive theory, buoyancy, genuine teaching practice - puts a real IDC within reach far sooner than waiting for an ideal moment that never quite comes.
