Freediving Instructor Development: What's Different From Scuba
Freediving instructor development covers familiar ground - teaching methodology, safety management, student evaluation - but the skill set underneath it is fundamentally different from scuba instruction, and that shapes the whole training experience. Breath-hold physiology sits at the centre of the course in a way it never does for scuba: understanding the mammalian dive reflex, recognising early warning signs of a shallow water blackout, and teaching students to manage anxiety and relaxation rather than simply air supply. Buddy-based safety protocols are also far more central, since a freediver's safety depends almost entirely on direct supervision from a trained buddy at the surface, not equipment redundancy. Candidates coming from a scuba instructing background often find the technical teaching skills transfer well - briefing, demonstration, feedback - but need real time to adjust to freediving's much narrower margin for error and slower, calmer teaching pace. Freediving instructor training tends to reward patience and precision over speed, which is a useful mindset shift for any instructor, freediving or otherwise.
