The Instructor Examination: What to Expect on IE Day
The Instructor Examination, or IE, is conducted by PADI examiners independently of the training centre that ran your IDC, and it is the final formal step to becoming a certified PADI instructor. Knowing the structure in advance takes a lot of the mystery - and the nerves - out of the day. The IE typically covers a knowledge development presentation, a confined water teaching presentation, an open water teaching presentation, a swimming skills and stamina assessment, and a rescue skills assessment. Each section is scored against clear, consistent standards - examiners are not looking for flair, they are checking that you can teach safely, correctly, and in a way a real student could follow. The best preparation is treating your IDC's mock exams as seriously as the real thing, since the format mirrors it closely. On the day itself, small things help: arrive early, keep your equipment simple and well-organised, and treat any mistakes calmly rather than letting one moment throw off the rest of your day. Examiners see confidence and composure as strongly as they see technical correctness.
