Understanding the Recreational Dive Planner: Tables vs Dive Computers
Almost every certified diver today plans dives with a dive computer, yet the Recreational Dive Planner tables remain part of core training - and for good reason. Teaching both, rather than treating tables as a formality, produces divers who genuinely understand what their computer is doing for them. Tables force a student to engage directly with pressure groups, no-decompression limits, and surface intervals in a way that a computer's single display number can mask. Students who understand the table version of dive planning tend to interpret their computer's numbers more intelligently, and they have a reliable backup method if a computer fails or batteries die mid-trip - a real scenario, not a hypothetical one. The most effective approach is teaching the two side by side: work a dive plan on the table, then show the same plan on a computer screen, so students see directly how the two connect. That comparison does more to build genuine understanding than teaching either method in isolation.
