What Does a PADI Course Director Actually Do?
Course Director is the highest non-staff rating a PADI professional can hold, and it comes with a specific, demanding role: training and certifying new PADI instructors through the Instructor Development Course and Instructor Examination process. Day to day, that means far more than running skill circuits. A Course Director designs and delivers the full IDC curriculum, evaluates each candidate honestly and fairly against PADI standards, and manages the practical logistics of coordinating groups through confined water, open water, and classroom sessions across a tight schedule. They also carry real responsibility for quality control in the industry - every instructor they certify goes on to teach real students, so the standard they hold candidates to matters well beyond the course itself. Becoming a Course Director requires significant teaching experience, a strong track record as an instructor, and completing PADI's Course Director Training Course. It is not a rating many professionals reach quickly, and that is by design - the role sits at the point where instructor training becomes instructor-of-instructors training, and the bar reflects that.
