Night Diving: Briefing Students for Their First Dive After Dark
A student's first night dive is often one of the most memorable moments of their diving education - and one of the most disorienting, if the briefing does not properly prepare them for how different everything feels once the light disappears. Communication is the first thing to rebuild from scratch. Hand signals that are obvious in daylight need a torch-based equivalent, and students should practise light signals on the surface before ever using them underwater. Buddy contact matters more too - staying physically closer than in daylight dives, and agreeing a clear plan for what happens if a buddy's light fails. Spatial awareness is the other major shift: without visual reference points, students can lose track of depth and direction far more easily, so reinforcing regular checks of depth gauge and dive computer becomes even more important than usual. Handled well, night diving briefings turn a potentially unsettling first experience into one of the most confidence-building dives in a student's early logbook. The sense of achievement afterward is usually significant, and it shows.
