Emergency First Response: Why Every Instructor Should Teach It
Emergency First Response - CPR, primary and secondary care, and first aid - sits slightly outside core scuba teaching, but it is one of the more valuable qualifications an instructor can add, both professionally and personally. Practically, being able to teach EFR alongside Rescue Diver and professional-level courses removes a scheduling dependency on bringing in an outside instructor, which matters for smaller centres running tight course calendars. It also reinforces an instructor's own emergency response skills through the simple fact of teaching them regularly - skills explained and demonstrated repeatedly tend to stay sharper than skills only refreshed at renewal time. Beyond the dive centre, EFR skills are genuinely useful in daily life - the training does not stop applying once someone steps out of a wetsuit. For instructors building toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer or IDC Staff Instructor, EFR Instructor status is also a natural, complementary addition to a professional resume, and one that broadens what a centre can rely on them for well beyond in-water teaching alone.
