Teaching Confined Water Sessions: A New Instructor's Guide
Confined water sessions are often a new instructor's first real teaching experience, and they set the tone for everything a student learns afterward. Getting the format right matters as much as getting the skills right. Start every session with a clear, simple briefing on land: what skill you are teaching, why it matters, and what a successful attempt looks like. Underwater, demonstrate slowly and exaggerate the key steps so they are easy to copy. Watch each student individually rather than the group as a whole - problems are usually specific to one person, not everyone at once. Positive reinforcement matters more in confined water than almost anywhere else in the course. A nervous student who gets clear, encouraging feedback after a shaky first attempt is far more likely to relax and improve than one who only hears what went wrong. Keep sessions moving at a pace that matches the group, not the clock, and always debrief on land afterward so students leave the pool knowing exactly what they achieved.
