Shore Diving vs Boat Diving: Adjusting Your Teaching Approach
Shore diving and boat diving both lead to the same certification, but the teaching involved is different enough that instructors moving between the two settings need to adjust deliberately rather than running an identical course in each environment. Shore diving puts more weight on entry and exit technique - reading surf and surge conditions, managing equipment over uneven ground, and building the stamina to walk in full gear before a dive even starts. It also generally allows for a more relaxed pace, since students can surface, stand, and reset without the time pressure a boat schedule can create. Boat diving shifts the teaching focus toward giant stride or back-roll entries, managing seasickness sensitively and practically, and working within a tighter group schedule where a slow student has knock-on effects for the whole boat. Neither setting is inherently harder to teach in, but assuming skills transfer automatically between them is a mistake. A student trained exclusively from shore genuinely benefits from a proper boat-diving orientation before their first charter, and the reverse is just as true.
