Mermaid Instructor Training: A Growing Specialty
Mermaid programmes have grown quickly from a niche interest into a genuine part of the professional diving world, and mermaid instructor training now follows a structured pathway of its own, built around monofin technique, breath-hold comfort, and water safety specific to swimming in a mermaid tail. Instructor candidates typically start with strong personal mermaid swimming skills before moving into teaching methodology - how to brief tail safety, how to build comfort for students who are new to a bound-fin swimming style, and how to manage the additional safety considerations that come with restricted leg movement in the water. Breath-hold awareness is a bigger part of mermaid instructor training than many candidates expect, even at recreational, non-freediving depths. For dive centres, mermaid programmes open the door to a different audience - often younger swimmers or families - alongside the traditional scuba and freediving offering. For instructors, it is a genuinely enjoyable specialty to teach, and one that continues to grow in popularity as more centres add it to their course catalogue.
