Liability and Insurance Basics Every Instructor Should Know
Teaching diving carries inherent risk, and while thorough training and careful course management are the first and most important line of defence, understanding the basics of professional liability protection is a genuine part of operating responsibly as an instructor - not a topic to only think about after an incident. Professional liability insurance, distinct from personal dive accident coverage, is generally considered a baseline requirement for anyone actively teaching, and understanding what a given policy actually covers - and, just as importantly, what it does not - matters far more than simply confirming a policy exists. Proper documentation habits matter alongside insurance itself: thorough, honestly completed liability release forms, accurate incident reporting when something does go wrong however minor, and clear records of certifications and currency all form a professional's actual protection, not just the insurance policy in isolation. None of this replaces qualified legal or insurance advice specific to an instructor's location and employment situation, which varies significantly by country and centre. But a working understanding of the basics, rather than treating insurance as an afterthought, is a genuine mark of a professional operating the way the industry expects.
