The Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty: Teaching Composition Underwater
Digital Underwater Photographer is a genuinely popular specialty, and one where the biggest teaching challenge often has nothing to do with the camera itself. Buoyancy control comes first - a diver who cannot hold a stable position will struggle to frame a shot regardless of equipment, and reef damage from divers chasing a photo is a real, preventable problem worth addressing directly and early. Once buoyancy is solid, composition becomes the real teaching focus: getting low and shooting slightly upward toward a subject, filling the frame rather than shooting from a distance, and being patient enough to wait for a subject to settle rather than chasing it. Lighting is the other major theme, particularly how quickly colour disappears with depth and why getting close to a subject - rather than relying on zoom - produces far better results underwater than on land. Framed well, this specialty also does double duty for a training centre: students who improve their underwater photography often become some of the best organic marketing a centre has, sharing genuine images from real courses rather than stock photography.
