Continuing Education: Why Instructors Never Stop Learning
It is easy to think of the IDC and Instructor Exam as the finish line, but experienced instructors tend to describe them more as the starting point. The best professionals in this industry keep learning long after they are qualified to teach. Some of that comes through formal routes - specialty instructor courses, first aid and oxygen provider updates, or working toward MSDT and beyond. Just as much comes from informal sources: watching how other instructors handle a difficult student, staying current on updated teaching standards and equipment, and honestly reviewing your own courses to spot patterns worth improving. Continuing education also protects against the kind of complacency that can creep in after teaching the same course dozens of times. Treating every course as an opportunity to refine your teaching - not just repeat it - keeps standards high and keeps the job genuinely interesting over a long career, rather than something that starts to feel routine.
