Blended Learning: Making the Most of eLearning Before Class
Blended learning, where students complete knowledge development through eLearning before ever meeting their instructor in person, has changed how much classroom time a typical course actually needs. The centres and instructors who get the most out of it treat the freed-up time as an opportunity, not just a scheduling convenience. Rather than skipping theory review entirely, the strongest approach uses the first in-person session to check genuine understanding, not just attendance - a short, low-pressure conversation or quiz review catches gaps that a student may have clicked through without fully absorbing. That freed classroom time is then far better spent on hands-on application: working through real dive planning scenarios, discussing local conditions, or simply getting more pool time, since water skills are what eLearning fundamentally cannot teach. For instructors, blended learning also changes the teaching skill required slightly - less time explaining foundational theory from scratch, more time diagnosing and correcting specific gaps in what a student has already studied. Used well, it tends to produce faster, deeper learning rather than simply a shorter course.
