Building Long-Term Relationships With Your Dive Centre
Whether you are employed directly or working as an associate instructor, the relationship between an instructor and their training centre shapes almost everything about day-to-day working life - scheduling, course allocation, support when things go wrong, and long-term opportunities like specialty or IDC Staff training. Reliability is the foundation. Turning up prepared, communicating clearly about availability, and handling last-minute changes professionally builds trust quickly, and that trust is what centres draw on when deciding who gets first refusal on the best courses or busiest seasons. Beyond reliability, genuine investment in the centre's standards and reputation - not just your own course numbers - tends to be noticed and rewarded over time. It also works both ways. A centre that invests in its instructors, through mentoring, further training opportunities, or simply clear and fair communication, tends to keep good instructors for years rather than losing them to the next opportunity that comes along. The strongest, longest instructor careers are usually built on a small number of genuinely good working relationships, not a long list of short-term arrangements.
