Referral Courses: Finishing Certifications Started Elsewhere
Referral students - divers who completed classroom and confined water training elsewhere and are finishing open water dives at a new centre - are a regular part of professional diving, especially at destination training centres. They need a slightly different approach from a standard Open Water course. The first job is verifying and reviewing, not assuming. A quick skills refresher in confined or shallow water before heading to full open water dives catches any gaps early and builds confidence for both the instructor and the student, regardless of how well their prior training went. From there, local knowledge becomes the real value an instructor adds: site-specific conditions, marine life, and any local considerations the student's original training could not have covered. Referral students often arrive slightly anxious about being "the new person" partway through their own certification, so a warm, clear welcome that treats their prior training with genuine respect - while still holding the same standards for the open water dives themselves - tends to produce the smoothest, most successful referral courses.
