How to Become a Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT)
Master Scuba Diver Trainer sits between Open Water Scuba Instructor and IDC Staff Instructor, and for many working instructors it is the most immediately useful rating to pursue. It requires certifying a set number of Divemasters and teaching a spread of five Specialty Instructor courses. The specialty requirement is where most of the planning happens. Rather than picking five specialties at random, it is worth choosing ones that complement each other and match what your dive centre actually offers - Nitrox, Deep, Wreck, Night Diver, and Digital Underwater Photography form a well-rounded, commercially useful set for most training centres. The Divemaster requirement usually comes naturally over time if you are teaching professional-level courses regularly. MSDT status matters practically, too: it typically unlocks the ability to teach specialty courses independently rather than under direct supervision, widening what you can offer students and, in many cases, what a centre is willing to pay for your time. It is a genuinely achievable milestone for any instructor building real teaching hours.
