From Divemaster to Instructor: Mapping Your Professional Pathway
Divemaster is the first professional-level PADI rating, and for many divers it is where the "job" side of diving begins. But it is also the launchpad for a much longer pathway, and it helps to see the whole map before deciding where you want to go. After Divemaster, most people move toward the Open Water Scuba Instructor rating via the IDC and Instructor Examination. From there, the path branches. Some instructors specialise, adding Specialty Instructor ratings in areas like Deep, Wreck, Nitrox, or Digital Underwater Photography. Others aim for Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, which requires teaching a spread of specialties and unlocks the ability to run in-house specialty courses independently. Further along, IDC Staff Instructor lets you assist on Instructor Development Courses themselves, and Course Director - the top of the professional ladder - lets you run your own IDCs and certify new instructors. There is no single "right" pace. Some instructors take years between each level while building real teaching hours; others move quickly with strong support from their training centre. What matters most is logging genuine student time at each stage, not just collecting certifications.
